| Paper/Presentation: NGOs and Africa's Development and Economic Growth | ||
While NGOs have gone from being only marginal actors in Africa’s post-colonial development to being the central actors through whom the world helps African states, Njoku recognizes that there has comparably little development in good governance and economic growth on the continent. Thus, Njoku seeks to answer the question: What are NGOs really doing in Africa? Should Africa should discard NGOs or should NGOs working in Africa be more grass root oriented to achieve more results? How best can NGOs serve Africa’s development interests? This paper reviews the above issues and argues that NGOs mandate in Africa should be redefined from that of conduit for disseminating aids from western donors and policy and good governance monitors, to channels for capacity building and local community empowerment as this is the only way that development and economic growth can be encouraged and achieved in Africa. |
