Dr. Abdoulaye Dieng Sarr is currently a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health. A native of Senegal, Dr. Dieng Sarr studied as a Fogarty Fellow at Harvard from 1994-1999. Dr. Dieng Sarr holds a post-graduate certificate in clinical microbiology and biochemistry and a doctorate of pharmacy from Université Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal and a Doctorate of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Dieng Sarr's current research involves the characterization of HIV-1 and HIV-2 primary and early infection in heterosexually infected individuals. He has conducted original research on developing micro methods for HIV Cell Mediated Immunity assays by Elispot and on generating HIV-1 and HIV-2 fusion proteins using the genetically detoxified Anthrax Lethal Factor to stimulate and quantify CTL by Elispot assay. Dr. Dieng Sarr has also served as the Coordinator of the National HIV/STD Sentinel Surveillance Program from 1989 - 1994 in Senegal. Additionally, Dr. Dieng Sarr has served as a lecturer in Pharmacology and Microbiology at the National Nursing School and the School of Hygiene and Public Health in Dakar, Senegal and as a Scientific Adviser for the AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN). |

In the face of the growing AIDS epidemic in Africa and its enormous political, social, and economic consequences, Sarr recognizes the need for prevention and public education in order to end the epidemic and restore order to the continent, “It is only in the framework of intersectoral collaboration that true and sustainable progress will be made to stem the tide of the epidemic." |
