African Global Leadership Award Presented to Dr. Erieka Bennett |
December 14, 2007 |
Afrocentric scholar and Pan Africa activist Dr. Erieka Bennett was awarded the African Global Leadership Award for her work promoting Diaspora affairs last month. |
The award, endorsed by the World Bank and IMF African Society, was presented to Bennett at the annual ceremony in London. Bennett recognized the many people who have taken a hand in keeping African Diaspora issues on the forefront of the AU’s agenda, such as Mel Foote, Stan Straughter and his mentor Dr. Leon H. Sullivan of the Sullivan Foundation, and journalist Tony Regusters. “I give glory and honor to God and our ancestors, and I especially want to mention certain people in the USA,” she said. |
Bennett, who has traveled, lived and worked in Africa for more than 30 years, is the founder and Head of Mission of the Diaspora African Forum (DAF), and has done much work in the African Union’s development of Diaspora issues. With the DAF, Bennett has been responsible for building sustainable cultural, human, geopolitical, international, philanthropic and economic relations between Africans in the Diaspora and people on the African continent, with specialized missions in Accra, Ghana, Abuja, and Nigeria. |
Among many other achievements, Bennett is also Vice-Chair of the African Communications Agency, has published a journal, served as a consulting advisor to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and was an elected member to the AU’s Economic, Social & Cultural Council of the Africa Union (ECOSSOC). |
“I remember looking out over the clouds, recalling my childhood, and was so amazed at how far God has brought me from those carefree days,” she said. “Yet, all my years of personal growth and spiritual evolution have helped make me the person I am—someone who loves Africa, the African people, and Africa’s children all around the world.” [1] |
