Interns and volunteers play a key role at IIJD. We are looking for
highly motivated people to support our mission and bring excellent
interpersonal and communication skills to the task. Internships and
volunteer positions provide a substantive, challenging work experience
and will expand your understanding of IIJD’s work, and development work
in general. Interns and volunteers perform many of the same tasks and
frequently work together on projects, but there are some key differences
between internships and volunteer positions at IIJD.

Fund Development and Grant Writing Intern
The International Institute for Justice and Development (IIJD), Inc. seeks interns to assist with the IIJD fund development and grant writing activities.
Assist in researching potential funding sources.
Research, identify and initiate contact with prospective individual donors.
Assist in writing and editing high-quality grant proposals to governments, foundations and corporations, in accordance with each grant-maker’s preferences and requirements.
Communicate with community-based organizations, international organizations, universities, etc.
Assist in organizing data and files that track all grants and contributions and make information easily accessible to managers.
Assist with general office administration.
Qualifications:
Good understanding of fundraising techniques.
Ability to participate in fundraising activities.
Good understanding of grant writing principles.
Understanding of NGOs environment.
Strong interest in international development, particularly in Africa.
Understanding of contemporary development issues in Africa.
Good organizational and writing skills.
Capacity to conduct research online.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs.

Justice Program Support Intern
The justice program support internship offers an excellent opportunity for students looking to obtain experience in international NGOs and to learn more about democracy and rule of law issues, with a focus on Africa. Interns will work on a range of activities including research focused on democratic governance, as well as justice system reform projects for African countries. This is an opportunity to learn more about the legal environment and justice system institutions of African countries.
Responsibilities:
Assist with research of information, legal documents, legislations, and institutional practices and procedures needed to assess justice systems.
Select and analyze information on the justice system institutions (judiciary, police force, prison system, alternative dispute resolution mechanisms) of assigned countries.
Assist in drafting and/or updating country profiles.
Assist with updating database of justice system indicators for assigned countries.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or enrolled in current undergraduate or graduate program.
At least one year of office or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated interest in international justice, democracy and rule of law issues.
Strong understanding of contemporary socio-political issues in Africa.
Proficiency in Internet and Library Research.
Strong writing and editing skills.
Students in graduate programs in political science and international relations, as well as law students, preferred.
Ability to read and write in French desired.

Marketing and Social Media Intern
The International Institute for Justice
and Development (IIJD), Inc. seeks interns to assist in implementing its
marketing and social media plans. The marketing and social media
internship is an excellent opportunity for current undergraduate and
graduate students to employ their technology and social media skills to
generate exposure for the organization, its programs and initiatives.
The marketing and social media intern will work on a range of activities
such as web support and social media/internet management, including
blogs, message boards, email discussion groups, Facebook, LinkedIn,
Twitter and other branded communities.
Responsibilities:
Assist in running a comprehensive marketing and social media strategy.
Assist in graphics design, web design and communications to maintain appropriate development of campaign work.
Assist in developing, public relations and marketing presentations and videos.
Assist in implementing the ongoing public relations strategy.
Qualifications:
Very active within the social web and have significant equity in Twitter, Facebook, et al.
Proven track record of listening & engaging with an online community.
Experience in integrating content into multiple social media distribution channels.
Have a good understanding of the metrics associated with social media and online communication.
Have a strong understanding of tagging content both on and off domain.
Must be able to manage tasks with minimal supervision.

Information Technology Support Intern
The IT Support internship is an excellent opportunity for current
undergraduate students or graduate students to employ their technology
skills in the fast-paced environment of an international NGO and
grassroots organization. The IT intern will work on a range of
activities including web support and maintenance, the online platform
and technology support for our justice and development Initiatives
Responsibilities:
Assist with software installation and configuration.
Assist the IIJD team in building the online platform necessary for further implementation of justice and development programs and initiatives.
Assist in building MySQL databases.
Assist with converting MS Access applications to MySQL server databases.
Assist with website updates and maintenance.
Assist in maintenance and troubleshooting of office computers and network.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
At least one year of office or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated interest in international development, justice, democracy and rule of law issues.
Familiarity with database design, programming and management.
Knowledge or experience with MS Access and MySQL databases.
Familiarity with web design and programming.

Volunteer News Writer
The Volunteer News Writer is a new position at the International
Institute for Justice and Development. The work consists of writing
articles (400-600 words) for the IIJD’s Newsletter as well as
contributing in writing “Call for Action” campaign papers when a
particular situation requires it. The volunteer will work closely with
the media coordinator; most of the correspondence will be via email and
phone. The work can be done primarily from home although availability to
come to the office once a week is required. Access to Microsoft Word
and the internet is vital. 10-15 hours a week.
Responsibilities:
Writing articles for the biweekly IIJD Newsletter
Writing “Call for Action” campaign papers
Editing assignments as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated interest in international justice, democracy and rule of law issues.
Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary African politics and development issues.
Experience using Microsoft Office suite.
Strong writing skills.
Preferred Additional skills:
Understanding of contemporary Africa development issues.
Demonstrated interest in Justice and Development issues.
Understanding of NGO environment.
